Cultural Heritage and Climate Action Come Together in Antalya for COP31

11–16 November 2026,  Antalya-Türkiye

As part of the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a series of international events entitled “Cultural Heritage in Climate Action” will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from 11 to 16 November 2026, led by ICOMOS Türkiye and the ICOMOS Climate Action Working Group (CAWG).

Organised in collaboration with ICOMOS International Scientific Committees, Working Groups and National Committees, in partnership with Antalya Bilim University, the events will explore the role of cultural heritage in climate action policies and practices. The programme aims to highlight cultural heritage not only as something to be protected from the impacts of climate change, but also as a valuable source of knowledge and experience for climate adaptation, resilience and sustainable solutions.

Beginning on 11 November with discussions on international climate policies, global partnerships and ICOMOS climate action initiatives, the programme will address a wide range of themes, including cultural landscapes, climate resilience in the built environment, archaeological sites, modern architectural heritage, traditional water management, nomadism, local knowledge systems and climate justice. Sessions will also explore Antalya’s cultural heritage and local experiences, the environmental impacts of mining, energy and transportation policies, rural resilience and climate justice.

Bringing together experts, researchers and practitioners from different countries, the events aim to strengthen the role of cultural heritage within the global climate action agenda and foster new collaborations connecting local experiences with international policies.

Following the closing sessions on November 15, the programme will conclude with a site visit on November 16 to the ancient city of Termessos, where the excavations are supported by Antalya Bilim University.

The detailed programme is available on the home page of ICOMOS Climate Action Working Group, ICOMOS Turkiye and ICOMOS relevant homes pages.
